SHOW SYNOPSIS

RED RIDING HOOD

Conceived and Written by Michael McGill

Music and Lyrics by Michael McGill

Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house she goes. Red Riding Hood, not so little anymore, and her pre-teen pals try to stay on the straight and narrow in the latest adventure from the Missoula Children's Theatre, RED RIDING HOOD. The Big Bad Wolf, who is not so bad after all, and a friendly neighborhood Forest Ranger urge our heroes to stay true to the path, for in the Shadows lurk diversions and a sinister surprise or two. A pack of woefully nasty young wolves and a handsome Woodsman, too good to be true, are a must for our story. And we can’t have a wolf tale without Three Little Pigs and even a Boy Who Cries…you guessed it. With help from her family and a loyal young Locksmith (he carries the key), Red finds her Grandma and a whole lot more. Now if only she could retrieve her picnic basket from those rascally Raccoons. Life is no picnic when you stray from the trail!

Igniting Artistic Passion at Wirtz School

During the weekend of January 27, 2012 the artists who have worked with us to sustain our art program over the past three years, painted four murals on the walls of Wirtz Elementary. On Monday January 30th- the murals were revealed, and the students, staff,  parents, the Mayor and many PUSD members including Superintendent Dr. Verdugo had the opportunity to meet the artists and analyze, assess and seek to derive meaning from the works of art. This project is truly an inspiration for our students, and we are confident that the murals will leave a positive, lasting impression that will go far beyond what our textbooks and year end gallery event can offer.

Wirtz Students Are SHINING BRIGHT!

STAR testing begins on Monday May 7th, and will end on Friday May 18, 2012. This is an annual test that all students, grades 2nd-5th take across the State of California. Last year Wirtz students scored 741 points and we are working towards a goal of 750 for this year. Prior to testing, we had an inspirational assembly called The Ned Show, and a Spirit Week to get students excited and motivated to do their best on the test! Teachers, students and our amazing PTA decorated the quad area in a bright and fun SMARTIE theme! PTA also donated prizes for daily giveaways to selected students with perfect attendance.

A Message From Wirtz Counselor, Ms. Howard

Since the beginning of the school year, I have had my hopes set high on having the Missoula Children's Theater (MCT) visit our school for a week-long residency. The residency week gives all of our students the opportunity to audition, rehearse and perform in front of a live audience during two shows at the end of the week. It is quite a rigorous process, but very well worth it in the end.

MCT is a non-profit theatrical company that tours the country with a mission to help develop life skills in children through participation in the performing arts. I participated in four MCT productions as an elementary and middle school student, and I feel that the process and performances were some of the major highlights of my childhood! The experience that I had with MCT as a young student were absolutely magical, and truly ignited my appreciation and passion for the arts.

With a generous discount from MCT, the financial assistance from our neighbors at Paramount Petroleum, our wonderful PTA and Bellflower Travel Inn- we are planning to have MCT come to our school during the week of March 19 through March 24th to put on the theatrical production of, Red Riding Hood.

During the weeks prior, we will be having some school activities to get the kids excited and prepared for the big week! Some activities may include: MCT production music in the quad area, MCT documentary during lunches, MCT t-shirt sales, audition flyers posted throughout school, a workshop story-telling assembly, dress up and wear RED day, classroom visits and more!

Red Riding Hood Rehearsal Schedule

Please Click here for the Red Riding Hood Rehearsal Schedule & Parent Letter

To be sure that we are ready for our performances, we will follow our rehearsal schedule very closely. All rehearsals will begin and end promptly at the scheduled times, and cast members called for a rehearsal must stay for the entire session. If your child is unable to attend a rehearsal due to illness, please notify us as soon as possible. Due to the short rehearsal period, please understand that anyone missing a rehearsal may be unable to participate in the performance.

MEAL BREAKS

Cast members and assistant directors called for both rehearsals in one day should bring a sack lunch or snack with them for the break between sessions.  We will take this break together, and no one will be allowed to leave the rehearsal area during the break.  Please do not plan to deliver your child’s snack at break time.  Efforts to coordinate these deliveries have proven unsuccessful in the past. On Saturday, your child should bring a lunch, water, and a non-messy snack. It’s a good idea for everyone to eat a good breakfast before arriving.

COSTUME BAGS & COSTUMES

By Thursday, each cast member should bring a LARGE PAPER BAG with his/her NAME and CHARACTER clearly printed on it. The bags are to coordinate costume assignments and to store each actor’s own clothing during the shows.  All sets, costumes, props, etc., are provided by the Missoula Children’s Theatre. We ask that the cast provide their own soft-soled, closed-toe shoes. All cast members should wear their hair pulled back and out of their eyes on show day.

PERFORMANCES

There will be a photo session after each show, so no flash pictures should be taken during the performances. On show day, watches and jewelry should not be worn. The Missoula Children’s Theatre will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.

T-SHIRTS & CDs

We will sell our Red Riding Hood T-shirts all of this week. All sizes are available, and the cost of each shirt is $15. Checks (made out to Total Screen Design) are acceptable for T-shirts, though exact change is best.  MCT’S Greatest Hits CDs are available; the cost of each CD is $10. We also have DVDs of the award winning documentary about Missoula Children’s Theatre, The Little Red Truck, for $10 (cash only for CDs and DVDs please). Thank you!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to talk to us before or after rehearsal. We look forward to meeting you and working together to make this week a special one for all involved!  Thank you!

Welcome!

Greetings Wirtz Parents and Guardians:

I am honored to be serving as the Principal for Wirtz Elementary, and it is my hope that every child will be happy, safe and successful this school year!

We are dedicated to providing our students with an opportunity to learn in a fun and engaging way. We collaborate regularly, use best teaching practices, and seek to actively engage your child in their own learning experience.

We are doing our best to have a positive impact in your child’s life, and I welcome you to join us in an effort to prepare your student to become a resilient, responsible and productive citizen!

I encourage you to get involved and to be a part of the many parent committees that we offer here on campus such as English Learner Advisory, School Site Council, and Parent Teacher Association (PTA). We also have many parent trainings that will help you to support your child on their road to success here at Wirtz. Your participation and support is greatly appreciated!

It is our belief at Wirtz that all students can learn, and we believe that together we can, and will make a difference for all students.

One Person Can Make A Difference

One morning a man walked along a beach covered with thousands of starfish that had washed up during a storm. Now they lay dying in the sun.

He saw a young girl picking up the starfish one by one and tossing them into the sea. As he approached her he couldn’t help but ask, “Why bother? There are too many of them, you’re not saving enough to make much of a difference.”

The young girl  picked up another starfish and tossed it into the water. Then she turned to the man and said, “I made a difference to that one.”

We make a difference every day. Thank you for your continual support,
